History of St Michaels Manor

I’ve photographed a number of weddings over the years at St Michaels Manor in St Albans.

John Gape built St Michaels Manor in the 16th Century, on the medieval foundations of a former grand house. The Gape family owned the manor house until the present owners purchased it in the 1960s.

It sits in the heart of historic St. Albans, where old coaching inns and gorgeous period houses line the pretty area in Fishpool Street. Nearby, the River Ver and Verulamium Park provide green space, and a short walk away is the magnificent abbey.

The hotel sits within five acres of manicured gardens including a one-acre lake. It is believed the lake was once used to stock fish for the Romans and nearby monks.

Recently the owners have completely redecorated the hotel. Although the manor house was never intended to be a hotel, the owners carefully retained many of the original period features during its restoration and conversion. The vibrant fabrics, vivid artworks, overall colour scheme, and the designer wallpapers look fabulous.

Photographing weddings at St Michaels Manor

I love capturing wedding pictures on the wonderful sweeping staircase. In addition, the Oak Lounge is great for dramatic classic poses of the bride and groom.

In the gardens, with a wonderful waterside location like this there is an abundance of opportunities for wedding photographs. On my last visit my favourite picture was of the bride and groom taken over the lake with the manor beyond at dusk. For this dramatic image I used my signature floodlighting technique.
