History of Nether Winchendon House
Nether Winchendon House is a fabulous Strawberry Hill Gothic medieval manor house. It nestles in a beautiful Chiltern valley in the small rural village of Nether Winchendon. It has been owned by the same family for over 450 years. The house is the former home of Sir Frances Bernard, who was the last British Governor of Massachusetts Bay in New England.
Nether Winchendon House is a fine example of Medieval and Tudor architecture. Inside you’ll see the incredible 12th century Great Hall and the 16th century Dining Room with its elaborately carved oak frieze and highly detailed oak linenfold panelling. The property also boasts lots of fine antique furniture and family portraits.
On the outside, the curling Tudor chimneys and crenelated medieval parapets, as well as the 18th Century alterations in the wonderful Strawberry Hill Gothic style form an amazing mixture of architectural styles. The house has Grade 1 listed status in recognition of its unique architecture.
Nether Winchendon boasts a beautiful garden of seven acres, with many fine and rare trees. The extensive herbaceous borders and bulbs add lots of colour, whilst the gorgeous 18th Century bridge spans the meandering River Thame over to the water meadows beyond. Nether Winchendon House is widely regarded as one of the most romantic ancient historic houses in Britain today.
Photographing weddings at Nether Winchendon House
My favourite photography backdrop at Nether Winchendon is the house itself. The striking external architectural features make for so many unique and beautiful picture opportunities.
I especially love how the three archways lead through into the courtyard in front of the house entrance. These dramatic arches work beautifully from within the courtyard, or from further away on the tree lined driveway approach. On my gallery you’ll see a picture that I took of the newlyweds at dusk. I then used my floodlighting to illuminate the archways and courtyard beyond. Needless to say, the couple loved the end result.
Another favourite backdrop of mine is the charming 18th century bridge, an idyllic and romantic location for pictures.
Today Nether Winchendon House is available for both small and larger wedding celebrations. I love photographing weddings at this amazing riverside venue.
