The Manor House, Moreton-in-Marsh

Moreton-in-Marsh is a fabulous wedding location, and I highly recommend The Manor House Hotel in Moreton-in-Marsh. This 16th Century country manor house is packed with charm and character, alongside fabulous modern design twists and artworks.

Indoors you’ll find comfortable armchairs in front of real log fires, and adorable nooks and crannies. During the warmer months, the exquisite walled gardens offer perfect surroundings for a wedding drinks reception.

The Manor House Hotel in Moreton-in-Marsh is a classic characterful Cotswold stone building. It’s a charming and delightful example of traditional Cotswold architecture and layout.

History of The Cotswolds

Moreton-in-Marsh boasts almost 2,000 years of history. Its hostelries were primarily used as places for travellers to rest and coachmen to change their weary horses during the long journeys both north or south. The town was well placed on the coaching route from London to Worcester, as a result the market town thrived as a staging post and trading town. To this day several of the original coaching inns still exist.

Moreton-in-Marsh was granted its market charter in 1227, and the weekly street market still takes place every Tuesday come rain or shine. Like most towns and villages in the Cotswolds, wool and cloth making has been a major source of income for hundreds of years.

Most visitors coming to England prepare for rain. Just over 2,000 years ago, the invading Roman army brought their own supplies of wool – on the backs of sheep! This seemingly small event transformed the Cotswolds region forever. When the Romans departed from Britain, the flocks of sheep passed into the hands of local landowners – initially the church and then local families. Fleeces were traded and fortunes were made; many local land owners became fabulously wealthy. The wool from over a million medieval sheep in the Cotswolds was extremely high-quality. The finest Italian merchants bought wool from the Cotswolds. During the medieval period, it was said: “half the wealth of England rides on the back of a sheep.”

We know the Cotswolds today as the largest designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England. It’s known for its rolling hills, distinctive thatched cottages and honey-coloured villages and market towns.
