History of Latimer Estate
As you can imagine with a grand manor house location like Latimer Estate, there are so many wedding photography opportunities everywhere you look, both indoors and out. I love photographing this venue, but even more so knowing the history of it.
Latimer Estate’s origins date far back to 1194. Edward I’s daughters once resided there and Charles I was imprisoned at the house in 1647.
During WWII the British government used the house as a centre for Intelligence gathering, and held German prisoners of war in the cellars, including none other than Rudolf Hess!
Since WWII the house is rumoured to have been an MI6 training base, and the secret tunnels remain below the building to this day. If only the walls could talk, the colourful history of this amazing place would reveal so many well kept secrets!
A fire severely damaged the original house in 1834, leaving only the chimneys and cellars. The famous architect Edward Blore rebuilt it in a Victorian-Gothic revival style. (You might recognise his other work: Chatsworth House and Buckingham Palace.)
Photographing Weddings at Latimer Estate
Fast forward to 2018, and the hotel has just undergone an huge £7m refurbishment. The hotel’s hilltop location provides the most mesmerising views. For example, the Chess valley and the glistening trout lakes provide a stunning backdrop, often with herons, ducks and geese.
This hotel is just a five minute drive from my studio in Chesham, heaven!
