Selecting a Photographer

Most couples I speak with don’t realise that an estimated 75% of the wedding photographers advertising in the U.K. are actually part-time hobbyists attending a handful of weddings a year. Their fees for a whole day can be as low as £600-£1,000! It’s easy to separate the hobbyists from the professionals if you know what to look for.

In this revealing blog article I’ll try my best to unravel the truth behind the many misleading glitzy photography websites you’ll find online. The reality is a world away from what most couples expect when they are researching potential wedding photographers. It’s estimated that about 50% of UK couples are unhappy with their choice of photographer, and the end results!

My industry is totally unregulated. Many couples never think about the consequences of unknowingly commissioning someone to photograph their wedding who might not actually be qualified, experienced or insured. Most assume that the photographers they find online or have met at wedding shows are seasoned professionals.

My professional rates are for exceptionally high quality photography. This is very much my full time job and life long passion. During my career I’ve photographed 1,200 weddings, and online I have over 250 5 star reviews.

Optional album choices

I keep a wide range of albums to suit different tastes and budgets.

The principal wedding album starts at £400 – please email me for a copy of my album price list.

Options include glossy coffee table albums, photobooks and traditional photo albums, all in various sizes and finishes.

My in-house graphic designer Jo creates all of our bespoke designs – we do not use the mass-produced drag and drop design albums you might find from less expensive photographers.

You’re welcome to book my digital-only service, then consider purchasing an album at a later date. Many of my customers prefer to do this, spreading the cost out over a period of time that suits them.

Standard or Advanced Editing

Standard Editing – Most photographers edit weddings using auto-correct software, and the quality with the latest AI technology is pretty good. The software replicates my advanced editing style to best of its ability. Compared to my advanced edit, the accuracy is about 50-60%. This is how the majority of wedding photographers release their customer photographs. You can then detail individual images for advanced or fine art editing at a later date if required. This is a great way to keep the initial costs as sensible as possible.

Advanced Editing – the difference is staggering when I employ my more advanced editing techniques, we’re now talking about images that really have the wow factor. All advanced edited images are individually fine tuned by me to a superior standard throughout. Colours and contrasts will be perfected. Uprights are corrected, crops are spot on etc. Also, the highlight and shadow definition is far superior – this is particularly noticeable on the bride’s pale dress and under guests shadowy hats, and especially so on skin tones for pictures captured with flash lighting.  Also, the worst skin reflections will be removed. On dull days I’ll even brighten the backdrops to really boost the final results!  It is very rare to see wedding photographers working to this advanced level on every wedding image. Included if opting for my advanced editing option on your reservation with me, or it’s £5 per image if requesting individual advanced image edits after the day.

Fine Art Editing – this is must if you’re producing big enlargements from the JPEGs I supply. I now obsess about the quality! I’m also do photoshop work where necessary to open eyes, swap heads around for best expressions, remove people, take out bra straps, remove exit signs etc. £10- £30 per image.
